of the water, off the beach, and away from   harbors, marinas, breakwaters, bays and inlets.  * Be alert to and follow instructions from your local   emergency officials because they may have more detailed or   specific information for your location.  * If you feel a strong earthquake or extended ground rolling   take immediate protective actions such as moving inland   and/or uphill preferably by foot.  * Boat operators,     * Where time and conditions permit, move your boat out to       sea to a depth of at least 180 feet.      * If at sea avoid entering shallow water, harbors,       marinas, bays, and inlets to avoid floating and       submerged debris and strong currents.  * Do not go to the shore to observe the tsunami.  * Do not return to the coast until local emergency officials   indicate it is safe to do so.  IMPACTS——-Impacts will vary at different locations in the advisoryareas. If you are in a tsunami advisory area;  * A tsunami with strong waves and currents is possible.  * Waves and currents can drown or injure people who are   in the water.  * Currents at beaches and in harbors, marinas,   bays, and inlets may be especially dangerous.  * Some impacts may continue for many hours to days after   arrival of the first wave.  * The first wave may not be the largest so later waves may   be larger.  * Each wave may last 5 to 45 minutes as a wave encroaches   and recedes.  * Coasts facing all directions are threatened because the   waves can wrap around islands and headlands and into bays.  * Strong shaking or rolling of the ground indicates an   earthquake has occurred and a tsunami may be imminent.  * A rapidly receding or receded shoreline, unusual waves and   sounds, and strong currents are signs of a tsunami.  * The tsunami may appear as water moving rapidly out to sea,   a gentle rising tide like flood with no breaking wave,   as a series of breaking waves, or a frothy wall of water.  ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND NEXT UPDATE————————————– * Refer to the internet site tsunami.gov for more information.  * Pacific coastal residents outside California, Oregon,   Washington, British Columbia and Alaska should refer to Hello All,

I would like to let you know that Richard Templin of Southwestern Yacht Club is in need of help by way of people donating blood on his behalf  and I would like to ask that you donate blood at the San Diego Blood Bank’s blood drive event at Southwestern Yacht Club to benefit Richard Templin.

I apologize to be giving you such short notice, but the blood drive event is being held tomorrow, Saturday, December 11, 2021 at Southwestern Yacht Club located at 2702 Qualtrough Street, San Diego, CA 92106.  The hours are from 10:00 AM until 3:30 PM.

Appointments are “strongly encouraged” and can be made at (619) 400-8251.  In the past, Richard Templin’s code to make sure the blood donated is donated on his behalf has been RT 19.  In any event, please let them know you are specifically donating blood on behalf of Richard Templin.  They advise to arrive hydrated and you need to have a photo ID.    While supplies last, each donor will be given a Comic-Con t-shirt.  Please look at the information flyer below for more details.

Richard is in need of blood so he can have regular transfusions to be able to stay alive.  Having blood for the transfusions is literally a life or death ongoing need for Richard who suffers from a bone marrow based blood condition.  The blood supply is low and having blood available is essential for Richard’s survival and the survival of many others.

I want to thank you very much for doing what you can in donating blood to help Richard Templin and others.  Richard is an outstanding individual, a fine family man, a dedicated angler and a dear friend. The world is a better place with Richard Templin being alive and well and I thank you for doing what you can to help.

Sincerely,

Bob Vanian

I hate to be the bearer of bad new but as some of you may have already heard, the San Diego sportfishing community recently lost a fine man in the passing of Ricardo Ruiz who was known as Guido around the waterfront at San Diego Bay.  I knew him from seeing him around the sportfishing landings and from the work he did in helping the San Diego Sportfishing Council put on Day at the Docks.

Catherine Miller of the San Diego Sportfishing council has organized a gofundme page to benefit Guido’s surviving family.  The gofundme page talks about Guido and states that “He spent many years in San Diego’s sportfishing industry aboard fleet boats as a chef and deckhand.  He was a key player in making Day at the Docks happen each year.”  The information goes on to state that Guido was also instrumental in putting on the annual “Gator By The Bay” event.

Catherine Miller, Vic Gamboa and Sarah Saraspe have organized a fundraiser “gofundme” page to assist Guido’s family, Diana and son Billy so they can begin to move forward without Guido.  They have set a goal of $30,000 and have already raised $24,195.

My guess is that if you have attended Day at the Docks, Gator By the Bay or spent much time around the San Diego Bay sportfishing landings that you might recognize Guido when you see his pictures on the gofundme page.  If you are able to help Diana and Billy by contributing to the gofundme fundraiser it would be much appreciated.  If you want to check out the gofundme page or make a contribution you can do so at:  https://www.gofundme.com/f/remembering-guido

Thank you all for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Bob Vanian

Here is a summary of my understanding of the launch ramp and harbor situations in San Diego County. For more details with regard to San Diego Bay, please read the press release that is in the 12:15 AM update below that is from earlier today.  The press release was based on a San Diego County amended health order and reflects the spirit of the situation with regard to San Diego County harbors.

My understanding is that Oceanside Harbor, Mission Bay and San Diego Bay are now open to recreational boating activities with certain restrictions. First and foremost is the restriction that all individuals in the group and aboard the boat must be of the same household.

A couple of the things that are not allowed are gatherings of people and non-physical distancing activities (non-social distancing activities.)

The information I have is that the launch ramp and the parking lot for boat launching in Oceanside Harbor are now open for recreational boating activity.

The information I have about Mission Bay is that the South Shores launch ramp and parking area are open for vehicles with boat trailers.

Paul Lebowitz of Western Outdoor News was at South Shores launch ramp this morning and reported that police were guarding the entrance and that you needed to be towing a boat trailer to get in.  Paul also took a look at the Dana Landing Launch Ramp which was taped off and was closed.

Paul then went to the launch ramp at Shelter Island in San Diego Bay and said that it was indeed open. He said the authorities wanted people to park their cars with the trailers attached so there was an open parking space between each vehicle.  They were also limiting it to there being no more than 4 vehicles on the launch ramp at any one time.

Paul took a look at the Pepper Park launch ramp on San Diego Bay and said it was open but that the parking was very limited.  You also needed to be towing a boat trailer to enter.

At Shelter Island and at Pepper Park, kayaks and paddle boards were being allowed to leave their vessels on the ramp so they could go park but they had to find a place to park their vehicle out on the street.

Paul also took a look at the launch ramp at Glorietta Bay and said he saw some rigs in the launch ramp area.  People had to find a place to park on the street and he said the street parking appeared to be very limited.

Paul did not visit the J Street Launch Ramp but said he had reliable information that the J Street Launch Ramp is still closed.

Please read the press release in the 12:15 AM report below.  It gives good insight into what is being allowed and restricted in San Diego County.

Some good news is that the Port of San Diego announced that beginning on Friday, May 1, 2020 that recreational boating with limits will be allowed on San Diego Bay.

Below in italics is a copy and paste of the press release issued by the Port of San Diego at: https://www.portofsandiego.org/press-releases/general-press-releases/recreational-boating-limits-allowed-san-diego-bay-beginning

April 30, 2020

Recreational Boating, with Limits, Allowed on San Diego Bay Beginning Friday

CONTACT: Brianne Mundy Page, 619.348.1518, bpage@portofsandiego.org

Vessel occupants must all be members of the same household

In compliance with the County of San Diego’s latest amended public health order, and with public health measures remaining in place to continue to minimize the spread of and exposure to COVID-19, recreational boating – for vessels on which all occupants are members of the same household – will be allowed on San Diego Bay beginning Friday, May 1, 2020.

The Port is gradually reopening public spaces in compliance with County Health guidance and in coordination with other coastal jurisdictions. Effective Friday, the following is what will be allowed/open and closed/not allowed on and around San Diego Bay:

  • Allowed: Recreational boating for vessels on which all occupants are members of the same household; kayaking and paddle boarding (kayakers and paddle boarders may launch from beaches); swimming for exercise
  • Open: Walkways, sidewalks, and promenades for walking, running, and bicycling (no stopping, sitting, or lying down); beaches are open for walking and running along (no stopping, sitting, or lying down); Shelter Island and National City boat launches (opening at 8 a.m. on Friday, May 1, 2020);
  • Closed: Parks, piers, park parking lots; Chula Vista boat launch (consistent with continued park closures throughout City of Chula Vista)
  • Not allowed: Gatherings and non-physical distancing activities; stopping, sitting or lying down in parks or on beaches; fishing from shoreline

Also beginning Friday, wearing face coverings while out in public and within six feet of others will be required throughout San Diego County. If one is likely to come within six feet of another, one should wear a face covering. Even those who are healthy and asymptomatic but who’ve been exposed to the virus can expose and infect others.

The Port encourages the public to continue to follow State of California and County of San Diego public health guidance – wash your hands often and for 20 seconds each time, avoid touching your face, and regularly clean frequently touched surfaces.

For the latest information about what activities are allowed on and around San Diego Bay, public parks and facilities closures, and more, go to portofsandiego.org/covid19.

I just had a phone conversation with the San Diego Harbor Police who reported that San Diego Bay will be closed to recreational boating activity beginning at midnight.  I asked if that closure included coming and going from one’s dock at a marina through the harbor to get to the offshore fishing grounds and they said that activity would be a violation.  All recreational activity on the bay is closed but commercial activity can continue.  This situation has been changing rapidly and if you want to check on the latest information from the San Diego Harbor Police, the phone number is (619) 686-6272.

At last word, Mission Bay and it’s launch ramps were closed and at last word the launch ramps were closed in Oceanside Harbor.
